Acupuncture

How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture is a mainstay of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) system of healing. It is not based on anatomy but founded on centuries of observation and case studies. QI (pronounced “chee”) energy, or the vital life force, flows through 14 meridians or energy channels in the body. These meridians link organs to the rest of the body. In addition, each organ connects to an emotion; for example, the lung to grief, the spleen to worry and the liver to anger. When the energy flow is disturbed, people can get sick or distressed. Physical ailments can be caused by a sub-merged emotion: for example, severe asthma may indicate a deep-seated sadness. The meridians come to the surface of the body at hundreds of different points. Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into these acu-points to suppress or stimulate the release of energy, thereby restoring harmony and correcting the imbalances that cause disease.

What are acupuncture needles like?
All of our acupuncture needles are disposable, pre-sterilized and stainless steel. They range from an array of fine and flexible varying lengths and diameters. An acupuncture needle does not have a cutting edge like a hypodermic needles does, and it slides smoothly through tissue. The depth of the needle depends on the location of the blockage, while the needle length varies from 13 to 150 millimetres.

Where are needles inserted?
Exactly where the needles are placed depends on the ailment being treated. For menstrual and other abdominal pains, one needle may be placed into an acupuncture point on the inside of the lower leg just above the ankle; at the juncture of the spleen, liver and kidney channels. For seasonal allergies that cause a runny nose and itchy eyes, needles may be placed in points on the hands, face and thighs, as these are the meridians that cause allergic reactions. The needles are typically left in place for 15 minutes to half an hour.
What can I expect during my acupuncture treatment?
You may experience a mild tingling sensation. Acupuncture is a very calming treatment which leaves you with a feeling of relaxation. You may feel drowsy or tired for a few hours after your treatment or experience a sensation of heaviness in the areas that have been treated.
Is acupuncture suitable for children?
Since children typically do not like sitting still and are often afraid of needles, parents might consider alternative energy therapies such as Biofeedback.
Is there any risk with acupuncture?
Our acupuncture needles are stainless steel, pre-sterilized and disposable which ensures that there is no risk of disease transmission.
How many sessions will I require?
The number of sessions required to correct an imbalance depends upon the condition and its severity. Recent injuries and conditions seen at an early stage will often improve quickly. Chronic conditions usually require additional sessions and are typically spaced out over several weeks. Often maintenance treatments are recommended to prevent a recurrence.Patients often experience dramatic results with the first session. Relief may last or some pain may return. In some cases, there may be no immediate relief, only to notice the pain diminish over the next few days.

How should I prepare for an acupuncture session?
It is a good idea to eat a light meal and empty your bladder before treatment. Since acupuncture moves your energy patients may feel dizzy or a little light-headed if they don’t have something in their stomachs. For this reason the needles are normally inserted while laying on the back.

Avoid drinking alcohol, eating a large meal or fasting before your appointment.

Do not wear make-up on the day of treatment or brush/clean your tongue. Visual inspection is a primary means of diagnosis for Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Wear comfortable, loose clothing and avoid the use of perfumes and colognes.

What can I expect for my first session?
Your first session will be approximately 1 hour. After completing an intake and consent form, electromagnetically sensitive Velcro straps are comfortably placed on each wrist, ankle, and around the forehead.

What will I feel?
A very sensitive individual may feel a slight tingling. Most will find the session deeply relaxing and fall asleep.

Are there any risks associated with Biofeedback?
Biofeedback is considered safe. No known side effects have been reported.

How many sessions will I need?
As everyone is unique, it will depend upon your individual goals.

Is Biofeedback helpful for Children?
Food intolerance’s and poor digest can lead to underlying issues of learning disabilities, problem behaviours, or outbursts of emotion in children. As children are often unable to verbally communicate their thoughts and feelings, Biofeedback can aide parents in helping their children achieve a sense of calm and/or focused attention.

What is Meta Space or Long Distance Therapy?
Meta Space or Long Distance Therapy provides the ability to receive a therapy session from a remote location. Each individual has their own unique energy frequency which when calibrated into the system can reach anywhere in the world. Like a cell phone, all that is needed is a sender, a receiver, and an exact frequency. Frequency transmitted via Meta Space has the same accuracy as in an office visit. It is a preferable method for those individuals with a pace maker or young children who are overly sensitive to energy.

Biofeedback or Acupuncture?

What is the difference between Acupuncture and Biofeedback?
Traditional Chinese Acupuncture uses fine, pre-sterilized, disposable needles that are inserted into meridians on the surface of the body, to stimulate Qi (energy) and blood. Acupuncture aids in the balancing of Yin and Yang associated with both internal and external organs. Biofeedback produces similar results to acupuncture, focusing on the balancing of the body's energy at a spiritual, emotional and physical level. Biofeedback is a viable option for those unable to come in for an office visit, as the ability exists for a remote session via meta space. (To find out more about Meta Space please see Biofeedback – FAQ.)

Who would benefit from Biofeedback?
  • Children or adults who are not comfortable with needles.
  • Those prone to fainting.
  • Individuals who are unable to come into the office benefit from a remote Meta Space session.
  • Those who have experienced positive results with other energy work such as: Reiki and/or Qigong.
  • Victims of stroke, chronic physical illness and/or brain injuries.

I frequently have cold & sinus infections, seasonal allergies, and asthma attacks. Which therapy would you suggest?
For immediate relief I would suggest an acupuncture treatment and then build long term resistance with Biofeedback Therapy.

I suffer from gall stones and experience mild gall bladder attacks, what would you recommend?

I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) (chronic constipation / diarrhea), what would you recommend?
